Walk down any hallway at Mount Tahoma and you’ll see it — denim jackets, vintage tees, baggy cargos, and one-of-a-kind outfits that don’t look straight off the mall racks. There’s something unique happening with fashion here, and it’s not about chasing trends. It’s about thrifting.

More and more students are turning to thrift stores to find pieces that help them express who they are. It’s not just about saving money — it’s about creativity, sustainability, and standing out. As Ben put it, “I wanted to create my own fashion sense instead of just copying someone else.”

For many, thrifting started with family. Both Ben and Jaycon said their brothers inspired them to get into it. “I realized my outfits were atrocious compared to my brother’s,” Jaycon laughed. “So I said, I need to start thrifting.”

Finding the right piece takes patience. Ben looks for quality and feel: “If it’s worn but fixable, that usually means it’s been loved — that’s a good sign.” He’s scored great finds from spots like the Value Village in University Place, the South Tacoma Antique Mall, and the Goodwill bins.

Thrifting isn’t always about brands, but Carhartt, Fox, and vintage jeans came up as favorites. Some students plan outfits ahead; others, like Jaycon, just go by color and vibe: “If the colors match, it works.”

Their advice for new thrifters? Be patient and keep exploring. “You won’t find the best piece every time,” Ben said. “It takes consistency and knowing what’s worth it.”

At its core, Mount Tahoma’s thrift scene shows creativity, courage, and individuality — all community values our school stands for. It’s about finding belonging through personal expression and showing that fashion doesn’t have to be expensive to be authentic.

As I wrapped up my interviews, one quote stuck with me: “Tacoma style is diverse, creative, and uniquely its own.” And honestly, so is Mount Tahoma.
