Can a Rice Cooker Make Breakfast? Yes. 

Most of us rush out the door in the morning, hoping we remembered our Chromebook, our ID, and maybe a granola bar. But what if breakfast didn’t have to be another thing you skip? What if it took only a rice cooker yeah, the same one almost every household in Tacoma already has? 

In my Mount Tahoma TV segment, I tried making a full omelet using nothing but a rice cooker. No stove. No pan. Just a few ingredients and the “Cook” button. It sounds wild, but the process is simple: crack your eggs, mix in whatever toppings you like, pour it in, close the lid, and let the rice cooker do its thing. A few minutes later, you lift the lid and boom—breakfast. 

Trying this recipe reminded me that cooking doesn’t have to be stressful or fancy. A rice cooker is something many of us already use every day at home, especially in a community as diverse as ours. From Filipino garlic rice to Khmer bai sach chrouk to Samoan poi and more, rice cookers show up in kitchens across cultures. Turning it into an omelet-maker felt like honoring all the creative ways our families make food. 

This tiny experiment also shows how problem-solving can be fun. Making breakfast in a rice cooker is a small act of curiosity, and curiosity is something our school really values. It pushes us to try new things, even if they seem a little strange at first. It also connects adaptability and using what you have, in a way that works for you. 

Plus, this hack is perfect for students who want to cook but don’t have access to a full kitchen. It’s quick, safe, and affordable. And honestly, there’s something cool about figuring out your own way to start the day. 

In the end, making a ricecooker omelet is more than a recipe. It’s a reminder to stay creative, take small risks, and find comfort in the everyday things our community shares. Even breakfast can bring us together.
