Before the first snap was ever taken, this season already meant more than wins, losses, or highlights. For the Mount Tahoma football team, everything changed last April with the passing of teammate Veron Lockett. His loss shook not just the program, but the entire school and South Tacoma community. 

Veron wasn’t just a player — he was a presence. He raised the energy at practice, pushed everyone to give more, and brought people together. Losing him hurt deeply. But instead of letting that pain pull the team apart, the players leaned on each other even more. As one idea echoed through the locker room and practices, it became their purpose: play for Veron. 

From that promise, something powerful grew. The team bonded in ways that went beyond football. Every drill, every game, and every challenge was connected to honoring their teammate. That sense of belonging and compassion showed up on the field. The result was a breakout season no one will forget. 

Mount Tahoma went undefeated in the regular season and reached the state finals at the University of Washington — a first for the program in 40 years. Along the way, the team faced injuries, pressure, and high expectations. But they kept pushing forward with courage, accountability, and respect for each other. Game after game, they played with heart, resilience, and unity. 

Although the final outcome wasn’t the one they hoped for, the meaning of the season never changed. This run wasn’t just about championships. It was about brotherhood, remembrance, and legacy. Ending the season with a final score of 14 felt symbolic — a quiet reminder of the teammate who wore that number and the spirit who never left the field. 

This season showed what Mount Tahoma stands for. It showed empathy in loss, collaboration in struggle, and hope through adversity. It proved that when a community comes together with integrity and love, something bigger than football can happen.
